Employer sponsorship - what it means
What "sponsorship available" actually means on a job advert, and the questions worth asking before you apply.
What sponsorship means
An employer that offers "sponsorship" holds a UK sponsor licence, which lets them issue a Certificate of Sponsorship for an eligible role. You then use that certificate to apply for a work visa - most commonly the Skilled Worker visa. The employer sponsoring you doesn't guarantee a visa will be granted; the application still has to meet the Home Office's own criteria.
How to spot it in a job ad
Look for wording like "sponsorship available", "visa sponsorship considered", or a specific mention of the Skilled Worker or Health and Care Worker visa. On this board, roles that genuinely offer it carry a "Sponsorship available" tag - if you don't see one, ask the employer directly rather than assuming either way.
Questions worth asking
- Is this specific role eligible for sponsorship, and at what salary?
- What's the realistic timeline from offer to visa decision?
- Who covers the visa and Certificate of Sponsorship costs?
